Captain Steven A. Kunkle DEPUTY COMMANDER, CARRIER AIR WING TWO Captain Steven A. Kunkle was born in Columbia, Missouri and traveled extensively as a Navy junior before settling in Jacksonville, Florida. He received a Presidential appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1973 with a deg in Mathematics before attending flight training at VT-4 in Pensacola, florida and receiving his wings in August 1975. Captain Kunkle received orders to NAS Cecil Field where he completed A-7 training and was designated a Light Attack Pilot. Subsequent flying tours included assignments with VA-46 as LSO, Training and Quality Assurance Officer, CVWR- and CVW-6 as Staff LSO, VA-174 as Instructor Pilot and VA-37 as Operations and Maintenance Officer. Following selectio for squadron command he qualified in the FA-18 Hormet and served as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer o Strike Fighter Squadron FIFTEEN. During his tour, the VALIONS won Battle E, Estocin, Silver Anchor and Phoenix Awards. z Significant shore tours include the Office of Chief of Naval Operations, Air Warfare Capabilities and the Bureau of Naval Personnel as head of the Aviation Junior officer Assignments Branch and Aviation Commander Assignments Branch. Prior to joing Carrier Air Wing TWO as Deputy Commander in August 1994, he served as Deputy for Operations on the staff o Commander, Joint Task Force Southwest Asia in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Southern Watch from February to May 1994. : Captain Kunkle has accumulated over 4000 flight hours and 1050 carrier arrested landings in tactical jet aircraft. A veteran of Operation Desert Storm, his decorations include Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, to Individual and two Strike Flight Air Medals, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “‘V” and numerous other unit, campaign and service awards. Captain Kunkle is married to the former Marty Konrad of Cincinnati, Ohio. They reside in Coronado, California where the son Steve is a student at Coronado High School. : 280
